Pahalgam earns its reputation the moment the road follows the Lidder river out of the pine cover and the valley opens up. This is the Kashmir most photographs promise — but the town itself is a base, not the point; the real reason to come is what fans out from it.
Betaab Valley, a short drive up, is where the pine forest presses right up to the riverbank — go early, before the tour buses. Aru Valley, twelve kilometres on, is the quieter version of the same idea, and the trailhead for treks toward Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar for anyone with more than a day to spend. Chandanwari, at the road’s end, is where the annual Amarnath Yatra sets off on foot — worth seeing even outside the pilgrimage season for the glacier-fed stream cutting through it.
Pahalgam town itself is small enough to walk in an afternoon, but the golf course along the river and the short walk to the confluence of the Lidder’s east and west branches are worth an hour on their own.
Good to know: shared sumos to Aru and Betaab leave from the main taxi stand; private cabs cost more but let you set your own pace and stop for photos.
